The Stanford Advisory Committee on Renaming Junipero Serra Features has issued recommendations to rename some features at Stanford named after Junipero Serra because of Serra’s role as a missionary and leader of the mission system in Northern California during the last quarter of the 18th century, in view of the missionaries’ treatment of Native Americans. The committee was asked to apply Stanford’s Principles and Procedures for Renaming Buildings and Other Features at Stanford University to these named features. On September 13, 2018, it was announced that the Stanford Board of Trustees had accepted the committee’s recommendations and report.
